We would like to thank Dr Colbach et al. [] for their rebuttal to our article [] as it provides us with an opportunity to clarify the limitations of the findings and add additional information to further support our hypothesis that competition for resources per se is not the primary mechanism by which weeds reduce crop yields. As with any new paradigm, the underlying assumptions of the paradigm should be rigorously tested.
