In the 600 years since the first printed Haggadah rolled off the newly invented printing press, thousands of versions of the Haggadah have been published. The Haggadah, which translates as ‘the telling,’ is the central text or user manual of the Passover Seder. The Seder is the ritual meal that heralds the start of the eight day Passover holiday when Jewish people recall their deliverance from slavery in Egypt in the 13th century BCE. This year, Passover begins on the evening of Saturday, April 12.

Ninety-nine years ago, Fanny Goldstein, the chief librarian at the West End Public Library in Boston, set up a display of Jewish books in order to encourage ethnic pride among the area’s immigrant Jewish population and educate them, and their neighbours, about Jewish history and culture. With that gesture, Goldstein launched the inaugural North American Jewish Book Week, an annual celebration of Jewish authors and Jewish themed writing, which gradually evolved into Jewish Book Month.
