A judge has told a teenage killer who stabbed a schoolboy, “you will live with this for the rest of your life” as he detained him for five years. The boy was 13, when he killed 16-year-old Kory McCrimmon last May. The pair, associated with rival gangs, had fallen out over £50. Their fight over social media escalated into a confrontation in a park in Glasgow’s east end which had fatal consequences. A landmark proposal to legalise assisted dying in Scotland is a “matter of conscience” and individual MSPs should be free to vote as they choose on the matter, a Holyrood committee has said. The vote next month will be the third time the Scottish Parliament has considered the move, which would allow adults with a terminal illness to seek help to end their life.

Scotland’s top law officer has instructed the criminal prosecution of the country’s only private jail over alleged failures to manage the medical care of a prisoner with Covid, who died alone in his cell in HMP Addiewell. The family of Calum Inglis, who have campaigned for an investigation, say the decision gives them hope of justice. It’s the first prosecution of a private prison and also the first relating to a Covid death in any setting.
