STV News can reveal seven young cardiac patients were given just a tenth of the pain relief they should have received following open heart surgery last summer at Scotland’s largest children’s hospital. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has admitted the error was made repeatedly, and involved youngsters operated on in the same theatre on six different days. On Friday, they reiterated an apology to the patients and parents affected.

Seven children were given a tenth of the pain relief they should’ve been after undergoing open-heart surgery last summer at Scotland’s largest children’s hospital, STV News can reveal. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) has apologised to the families of the children, who were given ten times less morphine than they should have been at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. The under-doses all occurred in one operating theatre at the hospital, during a very short period in June last year.

A mother is preparing to take legal action after her toddler was given the wrong dose of morphine following heart surgery at a children’s hospital in Glasgow. Ellie McAdam’s two-year-old son Theo was given the wrong dose of the painkiller following surgery at the Royal Hospital for Children. She says Theo was given a tenth of the morphine needed following a heart operation, which caused him to wake up in agony in June 2024. Ellie told STV News: “He’s only just started sleeping again.

Ellie McAdam says two-year-old Theo was not given enough morphine following a heart operation, which caused him to wake up in agony. It comes just days after STV News reported that the health board is investigating the human error that led to a newborn being given a massive overdose of paracetamol.
