During an entertaining South Lake Chamber of Commerce breakfast hosted by Groveland, members were treated to updates on the ‘city with natural charm.’Groveland City Manager Mike Hein and Mayor Keith Keogh provided a sold-out audience with the past year’s news at the event on April 18 at the Puryear Building on S Lake Ave. Chamber members were also treated to locally made honey and blueberry jam, gifts of seeds from Waterwell Farms and locally grown flowers that adorned the tables.

A Groveland food pantry is collecting new and gently used shoes to raise funds to buy supplies to feed the community. Love Groveland, a nonprofit outreach program, has teamed up with another organization Funds2Orgs who pay the charity for bags of shoes collected. The shoes are then sold for pennies in developing countries such as Haiti where Funds2Orgs works with individuals to create small businesses to provide economic opportunity.

The Crooked Can Brewing Company is one step closer to fruition for Minneola after a groundbreaking ceremony on April 16. This much-anticipated new development, which is located on North Hancock Road, has been several years in the making and is set to be the largest of its kind in Central Florida. Business partners Andy Sheeter and Alan Delahunt helped break the ground with local dignitaries from the city council and other supporters who have helped make their dream a reality.

A new bill to amend and expand the Live Local Act and land development regulations in Florida cities is rolling through the state Capitol in Tallahassee. HB 943 substantially revises the Live Local Act as it applies to municipalities by taking away local decision-making and a city’s ability to plan for and regulate housing development.

A lease agreement has been forged between the Lake County Rowing Association and Clermont City Council after months of uncertainty – but it did not come without drama. At the city council meeting on April 8, it was agreed that the city council would renew its lease with the LCRA for $1,000 a month for the next three years starting August 1. Thereafter, the fee increases 3% each year on August 1.
