Initiating the medical evaluation of a potential concussion during sports events occurs when there is suspicion of a possible injury. Clinical suspicion may arise from observing a substantial head impact, observable concussive signs and/or the disclosure of symptoms by athletes. This is difficult in a fast-paced contact sport (ie, professional rugby league match) because neurological signs may not be witnessed, and/or the athlete may minimise symptoms.
