Traversing the Bureaucracy Mountain Range is long and steep climb. Lenore Eklund nails the experience of medical motherhood again in her monthly cartoon. Except, I don’t know about that faceless person laying out all the steps at the beginning. In my experience, it’s usually: One more step, then one more, then oh, I forgot, can you just…. On the second Sunday of every month, we feature Where is the Manual for This?!, an editorial cartoon about the medical mom life from Lenore Eklund.

I was on our local TV news this week and if I had anticipated that, I probably would have put on makeup or gotten out of my pajama pants or something. But this was the third time I had been to a member of Congress’ town hall meeting in recent months and I didn’t think I would do anything more than listen to what was said and maybe catch a staff member in the hallway to talk about paid family caregivers.

We rolled out 50-plus people deep to the Oregon State Capitol on Tuesday to advocate for the passage of Tensy’s Law, SB 538. It was awesome to see so many folks in eye-catching yellow, the color of developmental disabilities services. Unfortunately, the state is nearly half a billion dollars short of its earlier prediction for the budget so there’s a lot of scrambling right now.

The Oregonian printed my opinion piece this week on the need for a bill that would reform our Medicaid system, allowing paid parent caregivers to the highest needs children in our state. The op/ed came out on the same day that the state’s economist released his report on the nearly $500 million fewer dollars the state has to spend than they thought they would have while building the budget for the last four months.

Last November, my 14-year-old son went in for a full day of surgical procedures: a few on his leg and another for his g-tube. We stayed in-patient overnight and he was in a great mood. (During post-op recovery, he told everyone who came in the room how much he loved anesthesia and to make sure to tell the anesthesiologist how great she was.)Late that evening, a nurse was in our room telling a CNA about some training she had received in caring for someone who can’t move their own body.
