THE Irish Cup final takes place this weekend with Cliftonville and Dungannon Swifts both vying for the title. Current champions Cliftonville, who beat Linfield in the decider last season, ended a 45 year wait for the throne while Dungannon Swifts have only ever reached the final once, back in 2007, which they lost to Linfield. The Swifts have enjoyed a remarkable season, finishing in fourth place in the Sports Direct Premiership table.

TICKETS for the upcoming Ulster final double header at Clones will be distributed to the participating county boards and their clubs only as the scramble begins for the repeat of Armagh and Donegal. The two counties face off in both the ladies (3pm) and the men’s (5:25pm) deciders, the exact same pairings as both of last year’s finals, which both went to extra time. Armagh triumphed in the ladies game while Jim McGuinness’ Donegal emerged victorious after penalties.

Not many sporting careers span four decades at the very highest level but Kieran McGeeney isn’t your average sportsperson. Last season, exactly 40 years after pulling on the Armagh jersey for the first time as an U14 player, McGeeney guided his county to their second ever All-Ireland title. He was the captain for the first back in 2002.
