Nurses and midwives have been kicked, punched, had their hair pulled and fingers fractured as well as being sprayed with a fire extinguisher during the course of their work, a trade union conference has heard. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has called for increased numbers of security guards and more CCTV in hospitals in response to the “increasing number of assaults and verbal abuse”.

Early career nurses and midwives are being “driven away from the profession or forced to leave Ireland” as a result of the disparity between their salaries and housing costs, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation‘s (INMO) annual conference has heard. The union said newly-qualified nurses working in cities like Cork and Dublin are spending up to 77 per cent of their monthly wages on rent.

Almost a quarter of nurses and midwives have attended a doctor for work-related stress, a new survey has found. On Wednesday, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) published the results of its annual members’ survey to mark the beginning of its 106th annual conference in Wexford. According to the survey, which had 2,334 respondents, staffing was a major concern for members in terms of both staff and patient safety.

The provisional number of deaths by suicide in 2023 was the lowest recorded in more than 20 years, Cabinet was told on Tuesday. According to Minister for Mental Health Mary Butler, the provisional figure for 2023 was 302 deaths. It’s worth taking a look at what that means. Firstly, how accurate are these figures? They are provisional. There is a significant time lag in reporting on deaths by suicide, and this number is likely to be revised upwards as coroner investigations conclude.

The health and safety watchdog had “significant concerns” about the wellbeing of residents in a disability centre in Dublin after it was notified of two incidents of serious injury and unexplained bruising on three residents. On Tuesday, the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) published an inspection report on a disability centre in Dublin 6W run by Cheeverstown House. In addition to the serious injuries, it said there were 31 incidents of unexplained bruising to three residents.
