    There is “inequitable access” to public services for sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), as clinics work at capacity and are “struggling to cater for increasing demand”, a new strategy has found. On Wednesday, the Department of Health published its new National Sexual Health Strategy for 2025 to 2030, which highlighted priorities in terms of increasing access to free contraception, and expanding capacity for STIs, including the home STI testing service.

    The number of Covid-19 cases notified the State has risen by more than three-fifths over the last two weeks, the infectious diseases watchdog has said. Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) data shows there were 353 cases of the virus reported in the week ending June 21st, compared to 332 the previous week and 216 during the week before.

    Ireland saw a significant increase in cases of “slapped cheek” virus last year, with numbers being almost a third higher than the previous peak in 2018, the infectious diseases watchdog has said. Slapped cheek syndrome is a virus most common in children. It causes a bright red rash to appear on both cheeks. The disease, which is highly infectious and caused by parvovirus B19, is generally mild but includes symptoms such as high temperature, runny nose, sore throat and headaches.

    The proportion of medical tests known as scopes conducted at weekends has increased significantly over the past 15 years, but there is a notable variation between hospitals, figures suggest. These procedures are carried out using endoscopes, which are long, thin, flexible tubes with a camera and light source at the end to see the inside of the body. The figures revealed that 2 per cent of scopes were carried out on Saturday or Sunday in 2010. By last year, this figure had increased to 13 per cent.

Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, whose stage name is Mo Chara, appeared in court on Wednesday charged, under UK anti-terrorism legislation, with showing support for a proscribed organisation.
