    JACKSON, Miss.—John Horhn, a longtime Mississippi senator, is the Democratic nominee to be the next mayor of Jackson. Horhn defeated the incumbent, Chokwe A. Lumumba, in a landslide victory on Tuesday night following a primary runoff. As of 9:20 p.m., with 79 of 80 precincts reporting, Horhn had 17,729 votes to Lumumba’s 5,940—a lead of about 75% to 25%.

Experts will provide meaningful information on topics like student loans, home buying, down-payment-assistance programs, and drafting wills and trusts, a Jan. 13 City of Jackson press release announced. The first class was on homeownership and took place on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Trustmark Bank on Highway 80 West.

    Jackson residents will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with events and community projects in Mississippi’s capital. Ward 3 City Councilman Kenneth Stokes planned to host a series of events, including the annual MLK Day parade on Saturday, Jan. 18. Those events will commence with a wreath-laying ceremony at the MLK memorial on Freedom Corner at 10 a.m. on Monday.
