In 1977, the NCTE Excellence in Children’s Poetry Award Committee was established to honor outstanding poets who write for children. Since its inception, the committee has selected an outstanding poet every two years and begun selecting annual notable lists of poetry and novels in verse. This year, the committee is pleased to recognize twelve outstanding books of poetry and nine novels in verse as the 2025 Notable Books.

In this well-crafted picture book, a little Black boy and his sister enjoy a perfect day at the beach with their parents. They splash in the surf, play in the sand, chase after a kite, and generally live it up. The fun finally comes to a close at sunset when the little boy falls asleep beside his mother on the beach.

My grandmother, Rev. Alfreda Evangeline Smith (née Simmonds), was born October 23, 1939, in North Preston, Nova Scotia. She learned quilting from her mother, Annie Simmonds, who made quilts to help her family survive brutally cold winters in an uninsulated home. My grandmother was a proud descendant of Black refugees who evaded American slavery and migrated north to Nova Scotia in the early 1800s, bringing with them their songs, stories, language, customs, and crafts.
