Friday is a bit cooler behind the cold front that brought scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain to much of the region yesterday afternoon and night. Now it’s time to look forward to the Easter weekend and, generally, the weather’s going to be very nice. Saturday will be mostly sunny with just a light breeze and highs in the mid 50s.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely across much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa later this afternoon and this evening. Storms will develop across southwestern Minnesota around or after 3pm, then organize into a line that moves east across southern Minnesota and northern Iowa through the evening. The primary severe threat will be large hail with damaging straight line wind gusts and isolated tornadoes also possible.

Temperatures will continue to warm through the rest of the week, with highs reaching the 70s by the weekend. We’re also keeping an eye on a system that could bring a few sprinkles or light showers to parts of the region Wednesday morning and again Thursday. Rain amounts will be light. The rest of this afternoon will be sunny and warmer than yesterday, with highs climbing into the upper 40s to low 50s across the area. A two-part system will move through midweek.

We are going to get all of the cold out of our system today. Today is the coldest day we’ll see for a long time. After today, warmer air builds in and temperatures climb through the week, with highs reaching the upper 60s to low 70s by the weekend. Our overall pattern will remain mostly dry through the week but we do have a chance for a few scattered showers on Wednesday and Thursday. The rest of today will be mostly sunny but cool with highs in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.

We definitely took care of the “April showers” thing right away. After a couple of systems brought some much-needed moisture to the region, we’re now heading into a dry and quiet pattern that will very likely carry us through at least the middle of the month. We are tracking a system that will skirt our region with a few scattered showers late Friday into Friday night.
