We are closely monitoring the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms that could impact much of central and southern Minnesota and northern Iowa later this afternoon and this evening. Thunderstorms are expected to develop after 3 or 4pm, with the potential to produce large hail, isolated tornadoes and locally heavy rain. Individual storm cells will merge into a line moving across the region through the evening, exiting to the east and southeast around 10pm.

We are currently in the midst of a very active weather pattern and that trend will continue through the weekend and into next week. Isolated strong to severe storms will be possible in addition to locally heavy rain. The good news is that there will be plenty of breaks and dry time, especially this weekend. In fact, Saturday has the lowest chance of rain and thunderstorms between now and Wednesday. That said, we will be dodging scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday.

We are in the midst of an active weather pattern that will bring scattered thunderstorms, a few stronger storms and locally heavy rain through at least the middle of next week. The good news is that the smallest rain chances come over the weekend. The bad news is that some storms could produce hail, damaging straight line wind gusts and locally heavy rain.

We are approaching the one-year anniversary of the flooding that affected much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa last summer. While the setup is a bit different from last year, we’re heading into an active weather pattern that could bring a few strong to severe thunderstorms along with locally heavy rain over the next couple of days. The tornado threat is low, but storms that develop later today, tonight and again Thursday could produce hail and damaging straight line wind gusts.

After a cool, breezy and showery day today, it will start to feel more like summer with temperatures climbing back into the 80s by tomorrow and Wednesday. In addition to warmer temperatures, it will be mostly sunny but Canadian wildfire smoke will return to make the sky a bit hazy. Fortunately, most of that smoke will stay aloft and will not have a significant impact on air quality at the surface.
