    The devastating fires raging near Los Angeles have again drawn national attention to America’s wildfire crisis. Such destructive blazes have become increasingly common, and their human toll is staggering: lives lost, families displaced, and entire neighborhoods reduced to ashes. Like other recent severe wildfires, the blaze in Los Angeles raises questions about what can be done to prevent such devastation in the future. Fortunately, we know what works.

    1 INTRODUCTION Private lands support much of the world's biodiversity (Kremen & Merenlender, 2018). Conserving wildlife on private lands is valuable but can create tension if animals impose risks and costs on private landowners such as forage loss, property damage, livestock depredation, or disease transmission. These risks and costs can create perverse incentives that hinder conservation efforts (Innes & Frisvold, 2009).

    The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has finally adopted long-anticipated rules governing public company disclosure of climate-related risks, strategy, governance, targets and other metrics. As expected and widely reported, several groups have filed petitions for review to challenge the new rules, but the timetable for resolving the litigation is uncertain. The results of the upcoming national elections in November could also lead to future changes to the rules.
