Vanderbilt Law School recently received a $10 million dollar commitment from Sara J. Finley (J.D. ‘85) dedicated to advancing equality, equity and opportunities for women in the legal sector. Additionally, law professor Jennifer Bennett Shinall has been appointed the inaugural holder of the newfound Sara J. Finley Chair of Women, Law and Policy.

The Fall 2024 Vanderbilt Poll surveyed 955 registered voters in Tennessee from Nov. 18, 2024 to Dec. 4, 2024. The poll found an increase in Republican respondents who identified themselves as supporters of the “Make America Great Again” movement. Tennesseeans also expressed slightly increased support for state officials, reproductive healthcare and Medicaid expansion, although there was little movement on other key issues from the spring 2024 poll.

Alumni from Vanderbilt’s Class of 1989 joined together to memorialize a tree in honor of deceased classmates. The year-long process of planning was initiated by Matthew Cortellesi (B.A. ‘89) and culminated on Nov. 8 in a ceremony to dedicate the tree. Alumni from the Class of 1989, who had flown in from all across the country to attend the event, gathered outside of Furman Hall where the tree was planted.

Throughout October, Project Safe partnered with student organizations on campus to host events in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to Olivia Darrow, assistant director of Project Safe’s advocacy series, these events aimed to raise awareness and provide resources to the Vanderbilt community. In previous years, DVAM began with the Lights on the Lawn benefit concert in September.

Junior Danny Zhu and his startup team of students at the University of British Columbia and Vanderbilt launched Kaboo — an app that offers discounts at local stores exclusively for college students — on Sept. 26. Named after a Japanese budgeting method known as kakeibo, Kaboo aims to allow college students to save while boosting revenue for local businesses in their college town, according to Zhu.
