Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a common complication of malignancies, and it is closely associated with a poor prognosis [Citation1]. Generally, patients with MPE have a mean survival of only 3–12 months. However, the diagnosis of MPE remains challenging. Cytologic examination of pleural effusion (PE) obtained via thoracentesis is a standard method for the diagnosis of MPE but has a poor sensitivity of 30–60% [Citation2,Citation3].
