The 1970s were an interesting decade to enter the restaurant business in Vancouver. During what Razia Nasiri refers to as the “hippie times,” some customers refused to use cutlery. “They were trying to eat by hand,” she says with a laugh. Those same customers often left an unusual tip for the servers in lieu of cash: a bit of hashish wrapped in tinfoil. Clearly much has changed since 1974, but two things have remained constant at Afghan Horsemen Restaurant.

“These shoes are not for the weak,” Vancouver footwear designer John Fluevog says, gesturing to the two pairs of platform boots on the table in front of him. “They’re made strong, and they’re made to make a statement: stand up and be counted.”Olivia Jean nods in agreement. “You have to have that mindset when you’re in the entertainment business,” she says.

The end result is a wildlife centre that feels thoughtfully designed and peaceful throughout. “I’ve tried to build it as a place for people to come and heal as well as animals,” Robin says. He describes how, more than once over the years, visitors who later admitted they were feeling suicidal have found the place to be therapeutic. “They come and hang out here for four or five days,” and the animals work their healing magic.

You can do a solo or tandem jump from the Whistler Bungee bridge above the Cheakamus River or the WildPlay Nanaimo bridge over the Nanaimo River.
