Growing up, I remember fondly waking up to find my father sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee beside him, reading the Los Angeles Times newspaper before work. After he perused the articles, part of his morning ritual was completing the daily crossword puzzle. Watching him skillfully pencil in those small white boxes made me think he was the smartest man in the world. “How do you know how to do that?” I’d marvel, peering over his shoulder.

With the new year in full swing, my husband and I have started our annual savings plan with our son. Teaching him to respect money is one of many morals we have tried to instill as he prepares to head away for college in the fall. But it hasn’t been easy.
