    As Africans, when we live in our mother continent, the awareness of being African as an identity is not so overwhelming. We are, of course, aware that we are Africans, rooted in the ontological reality of our historical and socio-cultural roots, but we do not engage with that reality of being African as a regular or normative part of who we are.

The expansion of knowledge in medicine has widened the possibilities of living, as there are work-in-progress solutions even for the most difficult health cases, thanks to untiring researchers.

    The link between childhood vulnerability and propensity to crime in adult life has been established beyond doubt by researchers, but this is not a sweeping generalisation that all vulnerable children will become criminals. Definitely not! Yet it is a phenomenon to be studied if we really wish to have a society with ever diminishing crime rates, especially among young people.

    On March 21, as the world marked World Poetry Day, many questions came to mind, among them, the one chosen as the title of this discourse. Like other cultures around the globe, our culture as Tanzanians and more broadly as Africans greatly cherishes poetry. Globally, written poetry as an art form is as old as ancient civilisations, with works such as the Epic of Gilgamesh from Mesopotamia dating back as far as the 3rd millennium BC.
