Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has raised objections to what she says is the Government’s decision to hand over the Petrotrin refinery to a company that has questions to answer. The former prime minister raised the issue with the media before the United National Congress (UNC) screening of election candidates at the party’s Chaguanas headquarters. Persad-Bissessar said the Opposition has learnt that Cabinet has identified a company to operate the refinery.

THE delays in the completion of the highway widening project between Chaguanas and Chase Village have led to a loss in productivity, says president of the Fyzabad Chamber of Commerce Angie Jairam. He said that the interruptions to the project continue to affect the South-North commuter, who is forced to spend several unproductive hours in traffic. She said alternative measures such as a park-and-ride and an efficient water taxi service were necessary to boost productivity.

THE wife of missing rig worker Pete Phillip says she did not anticipate it would take her husband's employer, Well Services Petroleum Company, this long to recover his remains. Candacy Phillip said she was disappointed in the company's latest response, that the search-and-recovery operation for her husband would resume in March. In a telephone interview yesterday, Candacy said the company indicated that specialised equipment would be coming into Trinidad to assist in the efforts.

For over five years, the community of Toco has been serviced by one fire appliance assigned to a temporary on-call unit that works out of the Toco Police Station, says president of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service Association (TTFSA), Keone Guy. When notified of incidents, the responding officers, who are auxiliary fire officers, are then required to go to the Toco Police Station to mobilise, he added.

Incumbent MP for Chaguanas West Dinesh Rambally yesterday evening promised fireworks as he attended the screening of nominees at the United National Congress’ headquarters in Chaguanas. Shortly before 8 p.m., after the tassa and the music trucks had subsided and while the screening exercise was under way, Rambally entered the UNC headquarters flanked by supporters Edward Moodie, Richard Ramkissoon, Kasho Ganpat, Chanka Ramtahal, Imam Rasheed Karim and Zaid Mohammed.
