I was working in a community ED over 45 minutes driving from the mothership referral center. This patient had been seen by my colleague a few days prior and accepted for transfer to the main campus for surgical intervention.

An Apology Is Not a Career EnderWhether it be for CME credits, a hospital requirement, or a rotation, I think all people in the health care field — from students to clinicians — have experienced the mundane nature of self-paced online certification courses or modules. I, myself, recently completed a Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety from a not-for-profit organization. One section in particular caught my attention: a module dedicated to responding to adverse events.

As part of my global emergency medicine fellowship, I traveled to the Peruvian Amazon to participate in conducting a needs assessment of the locally available health care resources in conjunction with a local nonprofit. Much of this region of the world is only accessible by boat, and getting to a hospital can take days for those living in the most remote communities. At the end of our trip, my group embarked on a lake adventure.

After an evening of networking among vascular surgery trainees, the 2024 Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery Symposium began with an opportunity to acknowledge the value of private practice vascular surgery in the care of our patients. The Sunday morning private practice session echoed the sentiments of our private practice colleagues. The conversation initially highlighted the symbiotic relationship between private practice and academic vascular practices.
