1. IntroductionMore than 15 million infants are born pre-term each year worldwide [1,2,3]. Extremely premature infants born at less than 28 weeks of gestational age (GA) are at significant risk of having multi-organ injury and developmental abnormalities that predominately involve the lungs and brain. The lungs of these infants are immature, and they suffer respiratory failure soon after birth and often require supplemental oxygen (O2) [2,3].
