Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity will honour the life of a rugby league teenager who died suddenly. Layla Balenski suffered a brain haemorrhage which triggered a stroke after plunging down the stairs at her home in October. She underwent numerous operations and intense therapy and had astonished medical professionals by her recovery. But sadly Layla, who played for Ince Rose Bridge Pantheresses, died last weekend just two days after celebrating at her 15th birthday party.

The Stanleys will be a performing a one-off show in Wigan ahead of their debut at Glastonbury. The rising indie four-piece will perform a rare and intimate hometown show at the Boulevard on Sunday June 22 before heading to the prestigious festival.

A new pilot scheme which has seen school-children play a lead role in promoting community safety in Wigan borough has ended with an awards ceremony. The Mini-Blue Light project at St Gabriel’s Primary in Leigh encouraged year six pupils to learn about the public services helping to keep their communities safe. They also had their say on key topics such as tackling anti-social behaviour, water safety and crime prevention.

A Wigan borough home that had become a magnet for anti-social and criminal behaviour has seen its closure order extended once again. Access to the property in Siddow Common in Leigh has been restricted for six months due to frequent drug-related activity and criminal behaviour. Where a full closure order is granted, the tenant and any occupiers must leave the property for the term of the order. Now magistrates have granted an extension until September 11.

The celebration of nature with fun for all the family will take place on Sunday July 6, including adventure activities and outdoor arts, workshops, art stalls, performances and a funfair.
