Former Minister of Police and ANC leader, Bheki Cele, has opened up about why officials had to make sure that former President Jacob Zuma was jailed in late June 2021, leading to the July 2021 riots and looting. It has suspended Sikhumbuzo Shabangu, a director in the office of the Head of Department (HoD). The suspension was communicated to him in a letter dated May 13, which was signed off by the acting HoD, Dr Vish Govender. Suspended with full payHis suspension is with full pay pending an investigation against him.

This is as the province’s 54 local and district municipalities combined have raked in an unauthorised expenditure of R3.79-billion in the 2023-2024 financial year. The protest started in the morning and the police had to be called in to restore order after traffic was blocked, creating chaos in the northern Free State area.
