1 Introduction Rivers and streams are important conduits for terrestrial-derived carbon (C), transporting and processing significant quantities of net ecosystem production (NEP) and soil-derived carbon dioxide (CO2) to downstream ecosystems, the atmosphere, and the ocean. As such, rivers are increasingly recognized for their critical role in the global C cycle (Battin et al., 2009, 2023; Cole et al., 2007).
