Even as you step closer and let them pull you in—perhaps with a wondrous slash of dancing light on water, or an incredible hairdo—the idea of them being entirely handmade seems almost implausible.

American artist Heidi Hahn really wants the visitors to “Not Your Woman,” her new show at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, to think about the paint, even be seduced by it. “I still remember the first painting I did. I thought, This is it, this is the love of my life. I will never get over this,” she says. Hahn was 15, and had saved up the money to buy the paint from her weekend job working at a Los Angeles retirement home. Her picture was of an imagined woman.

A few days before the opening of his third solo show ‘Under the Same Sky’ at London’s Studio Voltaire, Jake Grewal, a rising star of the British art scene is thoughtfully surveying his latest work as the final curatorial decisions are being made. Soft January light is tumbling into the room whilst a metal crane obscures a curved triptych of around six metres long depicting five naked figures moving across a landscape of yellow rocks.
