The StarA local tech team has been turning bricks into bots while gaining an understanding of environmental science. Tahuna Normal Intermediate School pupils recently took part in the South Island regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Challenge. The competition is about building and coding a robot to complete timed "missions" on a large game board.

The StarA newly opened exhibition reveals the daily interests of one of New Zealand’s most important artists. "The Library of Ralph Hotere" at Dunedin Public Library showcases a selection of items owned by Hotere. Heritage collections librarian Donald Kerr said the collection of about 900 items was given to the library in 2021 by Hotere’s widow Mary McFarlane.

The StarA local charity aims to raise funds for persecuted individuals by spreading festive cheer. The Starfish Collective will be selling seasonal-themed crafts and food at the Araiteuru Marae Gala Day Festival taking place on Saturday. Trustee Kirsteen McLay said funds raised will help support two men who live fearful lives because of their sexuality.

Iconic machines old and new will feature at a fundraising car show. The Otago Community Hospice Charity Cruise and Car Show is returning for the 15th time on Sunday, November 24. Representing the "old" is a 1957 Two-Ten Chevrolet Belair owned by Peter Addis. The saloon has not been refurbished; instead, the original olive-green paintwork can be glimpsed under a patina of patches and rust stains. Mr Addis said he preferred keeping the distressed look rather than refurbishing it.

Earlier this year, Isabell Brinsley-Pirie lost her father, Graham Prime, who died following a short battle with lung cancer. As a tribute, Mrs Brinsley-Pirie has been taking part in the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s Marathon in a Month initiative.

The StarOtago Polytechnic’s horticulture course faces an uncertain future, as it is among the many programmes the institution is closely reviewing. The National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3 one-year course is one of about 30 that are under review at present, as the polytechnic looks to remain financially sustainable.
