Labor was able to hand down two consecutive budget surpluses in its current term. But the most recent federal budget shows a return to deficit this financial year. After the deficit peaks – at 1.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) next financial year – it will then take a decade to balance the budget.

Amid calls from mayor Jon Raven to cut spending “or see a hike in rates”, Logan City Council continues to waste hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce a propaganda magazine, masquerading as news. Council’s propaganda magazine was previously produced monthly and sent to ratepayers’ letterboxes. At that time, it cost about $1 million a year to produce and distribute.

A dispute between developers and Logan City Council has put a federal-government funded “urgent health facility” on hold. The $33 million project, opposite Logan Hospital in Meadowbrook, was developed to help slow ramping and provide care to patients of one of the country’s busiest emergency departments. About half of the building, adjacent to the Meadowbrook Shopping Centre, is slated to be used by the state government’s Metro South Health for emergency care.
