    As a kid, I had a fraught relationship with Victoria’s Secret window displays, an experience shared by many current and former queer women. Obviously, the displays were meant to be looked at and the models were intended to be attractive, but even at a young age I knew that people like me were not supposed to want to look at those images. Although I was a scrawny and somewhat timid seven-year-old, I thought I was dangerous for thinking girls were cute.

    Can I offer you some constructive criticism? Many readers may reflexively cringe at that question, which makes sense. For many of us, criticism feels primarily like a threat. As someone who relies on student loans and wage labour to get by, if I get too much “constructive criticism” from my profs or my boss, I could fail out of school or lose my job, and therefore wouldn’t have money to buy groceries or pay the bills.

    Winnipeg will mark its 150-year anniversary on Nov. 8, 2023. In the lead-up to civic celebrations, it is important to look at what Winnipeg’s incorporation meant to people at the time. The recent victory of premier-designate Wab Kinew’s Manitoba New Democratic Party (NDP) was historic. It also calls us to look back into why Kinew would become the first First Nations premier of this province, which was founded by Indigenous people, over 150 years after it joined Confederation in 1870.
