Google Cloud went down hard on Thursday, and took Cloudflare and some of its customers with it. Google published its first status update 11:46 Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) when it reported over 40 of its locations and 26 services were “experiencing impact due to Identity and Access Management Service Issue.”Google’s Cloud Console was among the afflicted services, meaning users couldn’t log in to figure out why other impacted services like Cloud Storage and Cloud SQL weren’t working.

Who, Me? Reg readers are so dedicated it seems some of you are married to the job, although you also admit that no relationship is perfect when you send stories to Who, Me? It's the column in which we share your tales of making massive mistakes and somehow staying together with your employer afterwords. This week, meet "Zeke" who told us about his time as a field engineer for a data communications company.

The Atari 2600 gaming console came into the world in 1977 with an eight-bit processor that ran at 1.19MhZ, and just 128 bytes of RAM – but that’s apparently enough power to beat ChatGPT at chess.

On Call Welcome once again to On Call, The Register's Friday column that shares reader-contributed tales of tech support terror and triumph. This week, meet a reader we'll Regomize as "Geoffrey," who told us about the time he was called out to fix a hospital's access control network – a setup that controlled physical access to different parts of the facility. Curiouser and curiouser. As the internet archive shows, this competition was first envisioned as a six-week campaign. Now it's 13 months. Imagine how you'd feel if you entered months ago and see the deadline extended (by my count) at least three times https://t.co/frZFHLnNg8

This is IMHO utterly ridiculous - by my count this is at least the third deadline extension for this contest. FYI this group has declined to answer questions about its governance and finances while preaching openness and accountability. Curiouser and curiouser.
