A trio of scientists have published a paper that explains how they found a dwarf planet in a database. As explained in a pre-press paper [PDF] titled “Discovery of a dwarf planet candidate in an extremely wide orbit: 2017 OF201”, in 2014 scientists used Chile’s Blanco 4m telescope for a project called the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) that observed extragalactic objects.

China’s National Space Agency today launched the nation’s first asteroid sample mission. The Tianwen 2 probe rode a Long March 3B rocket into orbit at 1:31 on Thursday morning. Its first destination is Asteroid 2016HO3, aka 469219 Kamoʻoalewa, which orbits the Sun but, when seen from Earth appears to orbit our home planet, earning it the title of a “quasi-moon” or “quasi-satellite”. Curiouser and curiouser. As the internet archive shows, this competition was first envisioned as a six-week campaign. Now it's 13 months. Imagine how you'd feel if you entered months ago and see the deadline extended (by my count) at least three times https://t.co/frZFHLnNg8

This is IMHO utterly ridiculous - by my count this is at least the third deadline extension for this contest. FYI this group has declined to answer questions about its governance and finances while preaching openness and accountability. Curiouser and curiouser.
