Lunch club in East End church recognises contribution of veterans

FORCES veterans, who have been helping a parish church in the East End of London to run its foodbank, now have a lunch club there specially for them. The weekly event, labelled “Scran and scoff” (forces slang for a meal), is held at St Dunstan’s, Stepney. Twenty men came to the first Wednesday-lunchtime session last week. They are now encouraging their friends to join them.

THE restricted use of mobile phones in schools was debated by the House of Lords last week. The “issue should be straightforward”, the global campaigner and crossbench peer Baroness Kidron said in her introduction. The devices risk detracting from the main educational purposes of “learning, building relationships, personal development and acquiring skills such as sports, debating, and drama”, she said.

THE funding of hospices shows that “voluntary sector beginnings” are “still very much in evidence”, Lord Farmer said on Thursday as he introduced his debate on how the state funds palliative care. “A review of funding would find a highly variable model for hospices: some are run by the NHS, with large annual charitable grants, and others are run by a charity that gets some funding from the NHS.
