THERE’S A NAME that takes him back 13 years. He’s been hearing it a lot lately. Understandably so. He knows someone who knows Rory McIlroy. The link is there and people are curious to know more. He did meet McIlroy once but that’s a lesser known fact. What is known is that he played against McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond in the final of the 2012 West of Ireland Championship and lost out by one hole.

THE LEINSTER SENIOR and intermediate camogie finals are set to go ahead this weekend as the controversy surrounding skorts continues. The 42 understands that the games will proceed at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday, and that all four teams – Kilkenny, Wexford, Laois and Carlow — will wear shorts but will change into skorts if instructed. The intermediate final between Laois and Carlow will begin at 2pm before Kilkenny and Wexford face off in the senior decider at 4.15.

CORK HURLER BRIAN Hayes says he was initially fearful about having suffered a long-term injury he picked up during his side’s league clash with Galway in March. Hayes appeared to have jarred his knee in Cork’s Division 1 game at home to the Tribesmen, coming off in the 60th minute after receiving treatment on the field. There was some concern at the time that he had suffered a cruciate injury, but a scan later ruled out any torn ligaments.

OFFALY CAMOGIE PLAYER Mairéad Teehan is hopeful the skorts issue will be resolved at Special Congress, but adds “it’s not a guarantee” that rules around playing gear will change. Motions addressing the ongoing skorts controversy will be considered at the Camogie Association Special Congress in Croke Park on 22 May. The decision follows recent events where teams protested against the issue by wearing shorts instead of the mandated skorts for matches.

THE IRELAND WOMEN’S 4x400m relay team have booked their ticket to the 2025 World Athletics Championships after winning their heat in qualifying round two at the World Athletics Relays in China. The quartet of Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Rachel McCann, Sharlene Mawdsley clocked a time of 3:24.69 to win the second heat, with the first three of each heat qualifying for the World Athletics Championships.
