A historic homestead in Fendalton has all but been stripped of its heritage protection, paving the way for its demolition. Daresbury House, near Mona Vale, was once one of Christchurch’s most valuable private homes, but is now too dangerous to occupy. The triple-brick and timber home, designed by notable architect Samuel Hurst Seager in the late 1800s, has as many as 50 rooms across three storeys.

A housing intensification plan with huge ramifications for the future of Christchurch will be debated on Monday, but two city councillors say they are forbidden from voting. One is Cr James Gough, the Fendalton Ward representative who has interests in property across town, while the other only learnt recently she is the benefactor of a family trust which owns a piece of vacant land.

Four people were airlifted to hospital after a jetboat flipped on the Rakaia River on Saturday night. Siobhan Campbell, Hato Hone St John spokesperson, said one person had serious injuries while the others’ were moderate. Emergency services were alerted to the jetboat flipping on the river - near Double Hill - around 7pm. A police spokesperson said a tractor assisted in righting the jetboat. Hato Hone sent three helicopters to the scene, which airlifted the patients to Christchurch Hospital.
