The Government currently provides loans for undergraduate students to cover tuition fees and help with living costs. In England, there is currently no upper age limit for tuition fee loans meaning students over the age of 60 can access them.

Petition 616557 is calling for the 30 hours free childcare offer available to workers who meet the required minimum income level to be extended to student midwives, nurses, and paramedics.

    Cost of living pressures on higher education studentsThe 2023 Save the Student survey found:The average student’s monthly living costs have increased by 17%, up from £924 in 2022 to £1,078. 18% of surveyed students have used a food bank in the last academic year, up from 10% who said the same in 2022. 22% of surveyed students said they often skip meals to save money, while a further 42% said they sometimes do.

    Background: Post-18 education and funding reviewIn February 2018, the then-Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced a wide-ranging review of post-18 education and funding. The review aimed to create a joined-up post-18 education system, which would facilitate life-long learning, increase value for money, and break down “false boundaries” between further and higher education. An independent panel report, generally referred to as the Augar report, was published as part of the review in May 2019.
