We report on an optical amplification and energy threshold of the two most prominent emission lines, 391.4 and 427.8 nm, of the cavity-less lasing of nitrogen ions pumped by femtosecond laser pulses. It was found that the two transitions both show optical amplification under a low gas pressure condition, while the 391.4 nm emission is barely amplified under high gas pressure.
