The Connecticut Department of Transportation said construction on the Interstate 95 bridge project in West Haven, Conn., has begun. A mix of federal and state funds totaling $136.5 million is being spent to replace structures built more than 70 years ago, state transportation officials said. “Replacing these aging bridges and revamping the interchange will ease the daily commute for more than 142,000 drivers on I-95,” CTDOT Deputy Commissioner Laoise King said.

A plan to utilize automated trucks has been put in place by the Departments of Transportation in Ohio and Indiana. In March 2024, the state DOTs announced an Interstate 70 Truck Automation Corridor stretching more than 160 miles between Columbus and Indianapolis. On Monday, April 14, two automated trucks with platooning technology were deployed to deliver shipments for Marysville, Ohio-based Ease Logistics. “Everything we do at ODOT is driven by safety,” ODOT Director Pam Boratyn said.

Volatility is expected to continue across energy markets, according to the Energy Information Administration’s April short-term outlook. EIA underlined uncertainties in energy supply, demand and prices resulting from tariff announcements last week. Additionally, OPEC+ announced some countries will increase oil production in May rather than July, as previously announced. The Brent crude oil spot price dropped to $68 per barrel as a result.

A previously awarded federal grant has been signed, allowing the Washington Bridge project in Rhode Island to move forward. The $221 million project will replace the current twin-span bridge built in 1969 that has been forced to operate beyond its capacity for decades, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. It’s official — federal funding for the Washington Bridge has been affirmed. ✅This is a win for Rhode Island, and we’re moving full speed ahead to get this project done.

Hopes of a freight market rebound in 2025 are still being threatened by the uncertainty regarding tariffs and monetary policy, according to the latest OOIDA Foundation freight market outlook. In February, the Foundation expressed its concern saying, “these policies could curtail – or even derail – trucking’s recovery.”Approximately one month later, with volume, demand and rates flat, capacity equalizing and rising operating costs; the Foundation again offered an “uncertain” future outlook.
