My first memory of watching sports is from the 1979 MLB All-Star Game, and in what would prove to be an omen of my first 24 years as a Boston Red Sox fan, it was a bad one. The Honolulu Marathon means different things to different people. For some it’s the culmination of months of training, for others it’s a boost in income from the influx of tourists. To some it’s a traffic obstacle to plan around, and to others it’s an excuse to visit Hawaii once a year. I’ve never had any inclination to run a marathon, so my closest direct association to it was volunteering to hand out water as a member of the Pearl City High School Leo Club my senior year.

One of the rules of polite society is not to talk about politics and religion. I’m not here to break that rule (regardless of the fact that some of you get awfully impolite in my inbox). However, there is no rule against talking about talking about politics and religion, and that’s what’s on my mind as this election season winds down.

TribuneJuly 29, 2024 at 4:59 PMI have a pet theory that most Olympics fans are not year-round sports fans, and that lots of sports fan (atic )s do not care about the Olympics at all. My longtime friend Kara—a huge 49ers and UH fan—takes umbrage with this theory, as she LOVES the Olympics. My evidence, admittedly, is primarily anecdotal. Most of the friends I see get excited about the Olympics on my social media feeds otherwise never mention sports.
