My first memory of watching sports is from the 1979 MLB All-Star Game, and in what would prove to be an omen of my first 24 years as a Boston Red Sox fan, it was a bad one. The Honolulu Marathon means different things to different people. For some it’s the culmination of months of training, for others it’s a boost in income from the influx of tourists. To some it’s a traffic obstacle to plan around, and to others it’s an excuse to visit Hawaii once a year. I’ve never had any inclination to run a marathon, so my closest direct association to it was volunteering to hand out water as a member of the Pearl City High School Leo Club my senior year.

One of the rules of polite society is not to talk about politics and religion. I’m not here to break that rule (regardless of the fact that some of you get awfully impolite in my inbox). However, there is no rule against talking about talking about politics and religion, and that’s what’s on my mind as this election season winds down.

My longtime friend Kara—a huge 49ers and UH fan—takes umbrage with this theory, as she LOVES the Olympics. My evidence, admittedly, is primarily anecdotal. Most of the friends I see get excited about the Olympics on my social media feeds otherwise never mention sports.

Is there just not enough to get outraged about in the world now? Is everyone really tapped out on their anger with America’s GoFundMe-reliant health care system, MLB’s blackout policy, the price of paradise and countless other real problems? It sure seems like it, because in the past few days, there has been outsized outrage at an NBA team using a nearly valueless draft pick on a kid who barely a year ago was a five-star prospect and a McDonald’s All-American as he finished high school.

I feel sorry for Caitlin Clark. Not because she’s had an inconsistent start to her WNBA career while suffering on an Indiana Fever team that is on pace to lose as many games in her first 40-game season as she lost in four seasons (and 139 games) at Iowa. Not because her salary is 0.6% of what last year’s NBA No. 1 overall draft pick — Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs — made his rookie season. Not because she’s dealt with some hard fouls in her rookie season.
