Showdowns are where you learn the most about each poker player. If you watched, and can remember, the action of the hand from start to finish, you can replay the hand in your mind and learn a lot about how a player thinks. You see the exact hand they called with preflop, the strength of hand they check-called with on the flop, the hand they check-raised 3x with on the turn and the hand they shoved with on the river.

The idea of the poker documentary is simple and original: start with a player in the tournament and follow him with interviews until he is eliminated.

Without any further ado, let’s jump in. 1. Limping Into the PotAggressive poker is winning poker. Limping into the pot is the most passive preflop play somebody can make.

Ed. note: This is the tenth and final article in a series designed to help recreational tournament poker players build their hobby into a profitable endeavor. Heads-up poker, the final stage of multi table tournaments, often gets overshadowed by the complexities of deepstack play and ICM . Many players shrug off the significance of heads-up, noting that you rarely get there and your overall poker skills should suffice when you do. But that oversight can be costly.

A new student started with me last week, and the first thing I always do is I take a look at their statistics and win rates. It was evident right away that the leading factor in his losses was his preflop calling. Filtering for calling preflop 2bets in PokerTracker 4 across all positions showed a losing win rate of -223BB/100 hands. This means, on average, every hand he called cost him 2.23BBs.This is a huge (and common) poker leak! And when calling preflop 3bets? -467BB/100 hands. Another huge leak.
