When in 2004 we bought this 1909 bungalow in Portland, Oregon, it was so dilapidated that the house inspector asked us if we knew what we were getting into. We could envision what it could become, though, because we work as a writer/stylist and photographer team for OHJ and other shelter magazines. We poured time, money, and sweat equity into the bungalow remodel.

This family-and-guest retreat, owned and designed by husband-and-wife architects, cantilevers off a cliff. The home, which connects to the earth in only six locations, sits on a recycled steel moment frame rather than concrete to minimize the carbon footprint. While the linear building measures 1386 sq. ft. (and can sleep up to 15, mostly in a bunk room), its actual footprint is less than 100 sq. ft. total.

Used mainly as a guest house and a writer’s retreat, it offers a quiet sanctuary tucked away in a busy West Austin neighborhood. The space features 549 sq. ft. of conditioned space was efficiently planned to comprise a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living area. Wrapping around the ADU, a generous 350-sq.-ft.

This detached accessory dwelling unit design brings forward a model of urban density while providing a private home that shares a courtyard with two other households. The 1225-sq.-ft. modern Tudor-style cottage in a modified split-level design has three bedrooms, one-and-a half baths, flexible utility space, and creative storage. To take advantage of the 25-ft. height limit and the yard sloping away from the sidewalk, the front door enters at the mid-level landing.
