Brazilian scientists have sounded the alarm that the poorly-understood Oropouche virus, on the rise in South and Central America, may cause stillbirths and neurological defects in babies infected in the womb. In a technical note published on 12 July, the Brazilian health ministry reported four cases of microcephaly—a type of reduced brain development—in newborns born from infected mothers and one fetal death that might be associated with the virus.
