Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests has dismissed as bogus the DA Leader John Steenhuisen’s claims that EFF boss Julius Malema benefitted from the looting of the now defunct VBS Mutual Bank. Malema was informed of this decision in a letter by the Committee sent to him on Monday, which the Sunday World has seen. The Committee found that there was no evidence that a single sent of VBS money landed in any bank account under Malema’s name.

The lifeless body of the missing regional court magistrate Mamello Thamae was on Saturday found in the boot of the car of her husband, Lehlohonolo Maketoane, at a guest house in Lesotho. He has since been detained in Lesotho awaiting extradition back into South Africa. He faces possible charges of kidnapping and murder. Police had launched a manhunt for the couple, who went missing from Heilbron, in the Free State, on Friday.

The founder of the Pick n Pay retail group, Raymond Ackerman, has died at the age of 92. In the statement released by the retail giant on Thursday morning, Pick n Pay confirmed the news. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death at the age of 92 of visionary South African, and founder of Pick n Pay, Raymond Ackerman. He is survived by his wife, Wendy, children Gareth, Kathy, Suzanne, and Jonathan, his 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren,” read the statement.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has cancelled his address to the nation which was meant to take place on Thursday evening. This is as a result of the devastating fire that claimed more than 70 lives in Marshalltown, in the Joburg Central District (CBD). The fire broke out during the early hours of Thursday morning in a five storey building on the corner of Alberts and Delvers streets. It is alleged that the fire started on the ground floor before spreading to other floors.

Orlando Pirates will return to league action on Tuesday night when they host the tricky Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium. The match will get underway at 7.30pm. Pirates were engaged in Caf Champions League preliminary round matches against Comoros champions Djabal Club where they qualified for the next round comfortably with a 4-0 aggregate score.
