There’s no such thing as good or bad timing, it will always feel like the wrong time, as momentum and fitness is lost and the mental battle begins to get through the non-running phase. It had been 21 years since I’d first found myself on Inis Meáin, the middle of three Aran Islands off the west coast of Galway. That was in 2004, to take part in the inaugural fundraising run for the island school, Coláiste Naomh Eoin, and there was a magically timeless sense about the place back then. Back there again this May bank holiday weekend, the first thing that struck me was how precious little the place has changed.

This is a sort of transition time in the athletics year, the end of the spring marathon season running into what they call the relay carnival season in the US. And still too soon to get properly excited about the summer track season. Irish athletes have fared well on both the marathon and relay front down through the years, although it appears things are changing. While Irish success in the relay is now soaring, our marathon running standards are going in the opposition direction.

I can remember a time when most of the running done in April was on a spring training trip, and preferably somewhere warm. It was a short but welcome break after the indoor and cross-county season, and some time to reflect and recharge in advance of the long summer of track racing to come.

It’s possibly the longest-running medal drought experienced by Irish athletics in recent times, the hope being it could end this weekend at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing. The Irish team of six athletes includes two medal winners from the European Indoors in Apeldoorn only two weeks ago; Sarah Healy, who won gold in the 3,000m, and Kate O’Connor, who won bronze in the pentathlon.
