I can remember a time when most of the running done in April was on a spring training trip, and preferably somewhere warm. It was a short but welcome break after the indoor and cross-county season, and some time to reflect and recharge in advance of the long summer of track racing to come.

It’s possibly the longest-running medal drought experienced by Irish athletics in recent times, the hope being it could end this weekend at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing. The Irish team of six athletes includes two medal winners from the European Indoors in Apeldoorn only two weeks ago; Sarah Healy, who won gold in the 3,000m, and Kate O’Connor, who won bronze in the pentathlon.

They are no longer travelling in hope, and more in the expectation and belief that they certainly belong in finals, and, given the right opportunity, can deliver a medal-winning performance.

Such is the relentless pace of world indoor records being broken in recent weeks that it’s hard to keep up. Some marks have been broken twice in the same week, and who else but Jakob Ingebrigtsen to come out in his first appearance of the season and broke two world records in the same race. Starting at the Millrose Games in New York earlier this month, Grant Fisher and Yared Nuguse from the US broke the indoor 3,000m and mile records respectively, within the space of two hours.

The Irish athletics scene is still in hibernation, with many of Ireland’s 2024 stars scattered around the southern hemisphere and the United States at various training camps. The big attractions are the warmer weather and high altitude locations mainly in the South African and Australian summer where the weather is consistently warmer and more predictable at this time of year.
