The University Students’ Council brought forward its proposed budget for the next school year at Wednesday’s council meeting, which includes a $50.45 student fee increase. With a focus on affordability, the budget proposed a 4.2 per cent increase in overall student fees with most ancillary fees increasing by one per cent and cuts to many paid student roles in the USC, including associate vice-presidents and coordinators.

When Western University president Alan Shepard was a 20-something undergraduate student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., he wrote every one of his essay paragraphs on a typewriter. Then, he’d often scratch them out and start again — over and over. As Shepard observes today’s students — who have upgraded from typewriters to laptops and touchscreen tablets — he sees a new tool in their arsenal: generative artificial intelligence. Western’s Senate will vote Thursday on whether to approve moving fall Reading Week to the week after Thanksgiving for the next two years — despite student pushback. Western University’s fall Reading Week currently occurs the third week after Thanksgiving weekend, usually the first week of November. The Senate Committee on Academic Policy brought forward this motion to address concerns about an unequal distribution of instructional days in the fall semester.

Rakhee Patel’s journey to Western Engineering began with a few pieces of coloured plastic. A self-proclaimed “LEGO kid,” Patel’s love of building led her to LEGO Robotics in elementary and high school. Now, the fourth-year mechanical engineering and Ivey Business School student at Western University spends her spare time building a concrete toboggan on the Western Engineering Toboggan Team.

USC president Sunday Ajak brought forward a motion at Wednesday’s council meeting to reinstate Greek Life special privileges after its members complete anti-sexual violence and hazing training. The University Students’ Council will vote on this motion at the second part of the November council meeting on Nov. 29. If passed, the council will advocate to Western University Student Experience to create this training for fraternities and sororities — also known as Greek Life — at Western.

Western is now home to a new ultra-high field 15.2T MRI scanner, the second of its kind in North America and sixth in the world. The magnetic resonance imaging scanner was delivered Thursday and is housed in Western University’s Centre for Functional and Metabolic Mapping at Robarts Research Institute.
