On Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, Latinitas Magazine had the pleasure of attending Media Night at The Hobby Center for Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) Houston’s production of Disney’s Frozen, and it was a complete showstopper that left Houstonian audiences spellbound! Disney hand-selected TUTS Houston as one of five regional theatres globally to produce an exciting and imaginative new staging! The production of the show was top notch and I felt as if I were at a Broadway show.

On Friday, Dec. 6, Vortxz finished their Texas Tour at Bad Astronaut in Houston, TX, which is their hometown and where they started their band. Originally from Pasadena, TX, this Latino Indie Rock band is growing in popularity and is set to continue their national tour in 2025.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) held a press preview day for their Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream… exhibition that spans over two decades of Artist Vincent Valdez’s work about the American Dream and Mexican-American History. As we close an election year, the timing of this exhibition is relevant to the legacy of Mexican Americans.

As soon as I found out that AARP was partnering with the New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF) to host a free screening of Say a Little Prayer at Regal Edwards Houston Marq’E, I knew I just had to see it and immediately registered with my guest. This film was written by Nancy De Los Santos, and directed by Patrick Perez Vidauri. The main costars are Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Luis Fonsi and Emmy-nominated Latina actress Vannessa Vásquez.

A lot of us grew up witnessing trailblazing Latinas in the music, arts, and entertainment industries. This Halloween is the perfect time to educate others about historic Latinas, and it’s the perfect time to learn more about Latinas making history in the Americas and paved the way for the next generation to succeed in their respective industries.

Han pasado once años desde que dejé mi país natal de México y empecé una nueva vida aquí en Estados Unidos, pero cada día me siento más conectada a mis raíces y crecen mis ansias de celebrar la herencia hispana que forma parte de mi. Cada año, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, se conoce como el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, donde se da reconocimiento y celebración a las numerosas contribuciones de las comunidades hispana y latina para la historia y cultura de Estados Unidos.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the last day of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Marketing Agency SpoiledLatina produced a fashion show for Jack Daniel’s to showcase Latino-owned clothing brands in Houston with the theme of Sazón y Tradición. Everyone was encouraged to dress “Houston Chic” as the event happened at the new Rock’em store in North Houston. The Latino energy, fashion, and culture were on full display as the walls were filled with various kinds of Western wear like boots, hats, and accessories.

In the United States, we urgently need more Latinas working in the tech industry. According to data from the National Center for Women & Information Technology, Latinas make up only 2% of the computing workforce in the United States. Also, a report from the Kapor Center found that Latinx people make up only 6% of the tech workforce, and that Latinx women make up only 1% of the tech workforce.
