INTRODUCTION Termites, especially those species that cultivate fungi (Termitomyces spp., Basidiomycota) to assist in plant matter degradation (i.e. fungus-growing termites, subfamily Macrotermitinae), are important carbon and nutrient recyclers in many dry tropical ecosystems (Collins, 1981; Jones, 1990; Jouquet et al., 2011).
