    West Michigan companies once again top our list of the state’s largest family-owned businesses, which is ranked by 2024 revenue. Wyoming-based Gordon Food Service takes the No. 1 spot with $23 billion in statewide revenue, a 9.5% increase over 2023. Walker-based Meijer followed closely with $21.5 billion according to revenue from Forbes, up 2.4%. Ada-based Amway reported a 3.9% revenue decline to $7.4 billion, rounding out the top three.

Eight of metro Detroit's top 10 companies are automotive-related, reinforcing the region’s central role in the industry. General Motors Co. led the list with $187.44 billion in 2024 revenue, a 9.1% increase that moved it ahead of Ford Motor Co., last year’s No. 1.

    Southfield-based Real Estate One Family of Companies maintained its top position on our list of the largest residential real estate brokerages in the Detroit area, posting $5.95 billion in gross sales, up 10% from $5.41 billion in 2023. The company also leads the list in transactions and licensed brokers, with more than 2,100 licensed brokers and 16,500 residential transactions. HRC Realty of Lapeer came in second, posting $2.04 billion in gross sales.

    Major players in the food industry made a strong showing on this year’s list of the largest family-owned businesses in Michigan, with three of the top five companies operating in that industry: Gordon Food Service, Meijer and Ilitch Holdings. Manufacturing, however, is the most prominent industry in the top 25, representing 28% of companies. Notably, the top three companies on the list are based in West Michigan.

    Walbridge claims the top spot on this year's list of the largest construction companies in the Detroit area, ending Barton Malow's multi-year reign at No. 1. Barton Malow, the second-largest firm, reported a revenue decline from $6.5 billion in 2023 to $4.5 billion in 2024, a 31% decrease. However, the company says that the drop reflects the completion of a $5 billion mega project that drove a 34.5% revenue surge in 2022 and 2023 rather than a downturn in the company's overall performance.
