While some companies are issuing threats and ultimatums, other companies are incentivising workers with perks and flexibility. In August, when Zoom ordered its workers back to the office, shock rippled across the internet. The video conference platform, which has now become nearly synonymous with remote work, seemed to be flying in the face of the very thing they represented. The company now requires employees living within 50mi (80.5km) to work from the office at least twice a week.

Once bustling high-rises are now scarcely used, if not entirely vacant. Some may sit empty, but others could transform. Once upon a time, the office was a second home for many. Assigned desks were decorated with personal items; favourite mugs ran through the dishwasher at the end of each day; wheelie chairs were adjusted to exacting specifications. Since the pandemic, that office routine has faded.

Unless you work for a luxury fashion brand, it’s unlikely you’re going to get a handbag as a work perk. But London-based communications manager Jackie earned herself one through her company’s rewards system, which grants employees redeemable ‘points’ to recognise their success.
