A letter? A letter? What is this — 1897 (Editor's note: incidentally, this is when Country Life was first published)? Do I have to cycle to the post box on a penny farthing? Ahem, no it’s not, and no you don’t.

A tricky one when every other person seems to be shooting up these days — so let’s start with a cautionary tale. A couple of months ago, I had a gang of friends for lunch. Nice friends, fun friends, so I spent a fortune on beef fillet. Everyone arrived, wine was uncorked, we sat and ate. Everyone, that is, apart from a guest who pushed the beef around her plate as if she was playing a private game of chess with it. ‘Didn’t you realise? She’s on Ozempic,’ another pal told me later. Huh?

Yet more money spent on "entertainment" - fascinator-making classes, macaron-making classes, flower arranging, and prosecco and crudités handed round by "butlers in the buff" - male students who dress up as naked butlers to help cover their tuition fees, their blushes just about covered in front (but not at the back) by an apron. (Is this OK these days, I've often wondered, while politely accepting a carrot baton from one of these gentlemen.

Given up idea of hotels for fringe and now camping. With my mother, my sister, one dog and a puppy. So very much in the market for CAMPING SITE recommendations just outside Edinburgh…

Very very very VERY proud of my mum, who's had the toughest few months imaginable and has emerged to write this very beautiful piece. She's even managed some jokes. My hero ❤️❤️❤️ https://t.co/n4w9x1Narw

Seconded. I have given this book to various friends because it's WONDERFUL.

We All Want Impossible Things by Catherine Newman, one of my favourite books of 2023 is 99p for Kindle. A heartbreaking novel about friendship which is also "utterly life-affirming and joyful." https://t.co/rZsXOQz9C6
