A local business in Morro Bay closed its doors for good on Sunday. Owner Geoff Montgomery opened Morro Bay Butcher & Deli five years ago at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He says business at the time was good. “We saw a big uptick in travel, people wanting to visit, and people cooking more at home,” Montgomery said. But starting in 2022, he says business started steadily declining. “I understand when people have to choose between buying what we offer and paying their rent,” Montgomery said.

Caltrans is testing a new tool. It’s a controlled burn machine called the BurnBot. “Inside there is an open box with these 20 torches,” said Lee Haddad, BurnBot co-founder & CTO. Tuesday marked the first time the machine has been put to use for Caltrans in San Luis Obispo County. “I think this is an excellent location for us to try this new technology; dry brush, dense forests, Monterey Pine trees,” said Jim Shivers, Caltrans District 5 spokesperson.

Two teams at Morro Bay High School are heading to Hawaii and Greece and are fundraising to make those trips happen. The girls water polo team will be heading to Greece where they will participate in a skills camp and scrimmage with other European teams. “I think it will be cool to see new skills and see a new way of playing that we’ve never seen before,” said water polo player Aleya Paul. Last season, the team won the CIF Division 2 championships.

Cleanup was underway late Sunday morning after the annual Deltopia partying took place. “It’s like a national holiday at this point, so it just gets insane,” said Aidan Bohen, a UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) senior. Deltopia, the infamous city-wide celebration marking the start of UCSB's spring quarter, brought crowds to the streets of Isla Vista on Saturday. “Thousands of people crowd the streets just looking for somewhere to party,” Bohen said. The partying along the streets goes all day long.

A new mobile sauna was recently added to Coleman Park in Morro Bay, but that’s not the only place where it will be. “You meet so many great people. Everyone has been friendly, supportive, happy and enjoying the experience together. It brings the community together,” said Joe O’Brien of Morro Bay. The service is available for booking three days a week in Morro Bay. Co-owner Ari Leva says it’s a space that can fit up to eight people at a time.
