Flood alerts have been issued in England after heavy showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, the Met Office said. Torrential downpours battered the UK on Thursday as almost a month’s worth of rain fell in an hour in Greater London, according to the weather forecaster. A flood alert has been issued on Friday for Rivers Eden and Eden Brook in the south east of England, and Upper River Loddon in the south west.

Drivers have been hit with chaos on the M60 this afternoon after a crash closed a number of lanes on the motorway. Two lanes have been closed by police at junction 15 for the M61 and junction 1 for Swinton Interchange. According to traffic site INRIX: "Long delays and two lanes closed due to accident on M60 clockwise at J15 M61 J1 (Swinton Interchange)." No further details about the nature of the incident have been released at this stage.

The mother of a newborn girl allegedly attacked by killer nurse Lucy Letby said it was the "hardest decision of my life" to switch off her daughter's life support, a court has heard. Letby, 34, is accused of attempting to murder the infant by displacing her breathing tube when she was being treated at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neo-natal unit. The youngster, known as Child K, was born "extremely premature" at 2.12am on February 17 2016 and weighed just 1lb 8oz (692g).
