The £50,000 annual prize, split equally between author and translator, recognizes fiction from around the world that has been translated into English and published in the U.K. and/or Ireland. Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq’s story collection Heart Lamp is among the six books featured in this year’s International Booker Prize shortlist announced on Tuesday (April 8, 2025). Heart Lamp, translated by Deepa Bhasthi, is a collection of 11 short stories written by Banu Mushtaq between 1990 and 2023. Earlier, an English translation of a collection of her short stories Haseena and Other Stories won English PEN translation award for the year 2024. That was also translated by Deepa Bhasthi.
