There is a scene in the first episode of the new season of The White Lotus where a group of girlfriends celebrate their arrival at a wellness retreat on the island of Koh Samui with a cheers: “To Thailand, to self-care, and to a week of new memories!” That was me a few months ago (sans the champagne and girlfriends) when I travelled to Thailand for an eight-day restorative retreat at the Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary & Holistic Spa in Koh Samui.

Known as “The Body”, Elle is Australia’s first supermodel. She carved a career out of her natural beauty and Amazonian physique – in particular her breasts – from the Tab soft drink commercial that launched her career in 1982 to swimsuit calendars and magazine covers, and a successful multimillion-dollar line of bras. But she couldn’t have predicted the very serious diagnosis that was to come.

Maggie Beer is in the kitchen of her Barossa Valley home, making coffee. She’s just approved a batch of hot cross buns with her team in the adjacent office – it is Maundy Thursday – and there is a bustle of activity outside as handymen work on the property and gardeners tend to the produce. When we finally sit, Maggie sets two pieces of cake on the table – she will later pack one for me to take for my mum.

Jessica Mauboy is sitting in a field of hydrangeas in the middle of a flower farm in the Southern Highlands of NSW. “I’ve never been to a flower farm before, it’s a magical experience,” she grins, looking out over the sea of pink, blue, purple and green. It’s one of many new experiences for Australia’s multi-hyphenate star: Pop singer, actress, talent-show judge, Indigenous role model.
